The French had their butcher too, gen. Nivelle who pursued his activity at Chemin-des-Dames.

Edited : Foch was preferred to gen. Haig (called the butcher of the Somme), and not to gen. French who was more concerned about preserving human lives.

One of the last two French WW1 veterans died recently. Some have wondered on this board whether there had ever been a French army, or one composed of other than white flag holders. Yes there was a French army. Some 8.4 milllion men were mobilized. Out of those, 5.6 milllion, missing ones not included, came out either dead or maimed, that is 2/3 of the total. In the meantime, they had stopped the German army twice, on the Marne in 1914 and at Verdun in 1916. The head of the allied troops was Foch, whom the allied heads of states preferred to British General French because he was more saving, soldiers' bloodwise. 20 years later, the prospect was a remake of the butchery. I can't blame the French soldiers for having been, then, less than merry warmongers.

What were your "coming out" of the WT stages?
by changeling ini think that we all leave the wt in stages.
i think that when we first "see" the wt as false we do not fully understand the implications.
i think we all go though stages before it's all settled in our minds and that the stages and the "road" may be different for each one.. here are my stages:.

and its outright dihonesty when they claim to vindicate the truth whilst they actually seek to preserve their own interests first.
Well, this thread is well buried by now but I owe to the truth to say that, whilst I knew that all organizations tend to develop a logic and a strategy of their own, quite different from the interests of the cause they are meant to defend, the internet, and JWD on the forefront thereof, have been instrumental in my awakening to this organization's various manoeuvres to preserve its own stakes, outwardly to "vindicate" Jehoah's name. For the record.

All the time since I started "studying" with JWs, I've been totally aware of the very serious (should say prohibitive) shortcomings of their theology (litteral reading of the Bible, fanciful reinterpretation of History in order to make prophecies match with their own history ), the totalitarian nature of this organization that wants to see only one head in the row, and its outright dihonesty when they claim to vindicate the truth whilst they actually seek to preserve their own interests first.
Still, I've been sticking to it, despite a feeling and reputation of not really belonging to the club, probably owing to hopeless independent thinking. I just thought, and still do, that I need a religion, everyone is partial to something, and I find some unique beliefs with JWS which suit me : no trinity, no hell, paradise earth, 2 classes aren't bad either, and I'm too lazy to look for a better one.
Now, do I really still belong to that religion ? not officially any longer, as I've been inactive since last august (used to be a MS and give a few public talks) and attend only the WE meeting, except when my wife wants to attend some others, which she not always do. Keep silent during meetings, as I was told I weaken the brothers' faith. I can assure that open silence is a very efficient and deafening form of protest and critique, when completed, off meetings, with private discussions with JWs, including elders, who want to know why I hold to this new behaviour.
All in all, I'm definitely on the way out, even though gently, and my 2 teen children understand very well that, as I'm telling them that they will be free to join their own religion, I'm not keen on letting them buy a one way ticket, that is get baptism, in this one. The problem is that my wife, who roughly thinks along the same lines as I do but more covertly, is afraid at the idea that their leaving this religion will induce them to a stray life. To be honest, I myself am not very much self assured, as to them, on that ground. Who said that life is simple ?

Do JW's avoid adopting pets because the end is just around the corner?
by JH insince a cat or dog can live up to 15 years or more, and most jw's think that the end is less than 15 years away, what's their thinking on this?
will they avoid adopting a pet because of this?.
i remember thinking that my cat would survive armageddon because i was a dub.....

I love pets too and if we've got only a cat at home (white mouse is buried in the garden, having died 2 weeks ago "being old and full of days"), it's only because we can take her on holiday , more conveniently than a dog.

It may be just me, JH, but I honestly don't think many JWs believe that the end is around the corner anymore, as their very lives bespeak. Quite a few are settled in the JW's religion, definitely with no feeling of urgency : either they routinely go about their business, being JWs out of habit, or they endeavour to get the best out of their lives, no differently from what "wordly" people do. In any instance, a supposed impending end has, IMO, no bearing in whatever decision they make in their lives. As far as adopting a pet is concerned, living in a large place, being able to take the pet along on holiday, having children, suffering from allergy or not, for example, and of course liking animals, seem to be more determining factors in the choice.

I mentioned this case with an elder this evening. He told me that it was probably the reason why the local population in St DiƩ opposed so violently the planned construction of a JW assembly hall in the area. One can understand...

Quel pied !!!! : a sheer enjoyment !!
(After "prendre son pied", to hold one's foot, a crude french modern slang expression meaning "enjoy sexual pleasure")
